Scratch That Itch

Juno's Garden has created all our products for pets with itchy skin and allergies. That's because our dogs suffered from it too!

Itchy skin is one of the biggest health issues for pet owners today and one that is difficult to isolate and solve. We have developed a list of suggestions and options for our customers, based on our own experience with traditional and holistic veterinarians.

What causes my dog to itch?

Diet - A certain amount of skin allergies in dogs are associated with food allergies. Common culprits are grains or redundant proteins in pet food (common ones are corn, wheat, chicken and yeast).

Environment - Most vets are in agreement that environment plays a much larger roll than previously thought. Atopic Dermatitis, a common diagnosis for dogs with skin allergies, is triggered when pets come in contact with or inhale allergens, including:

Fleas - Another common cause is flea dermatitis. Your dog gets bit, scratches at the bite, it gets irritated and he continues to scratch, itch or worse...a hot spot.

How do I stop this problem?

The best solution is multi-pronged:

  1. Eliminate grain from your dog's food. Add Fatty Acids (Omega 3 and 6) to your dog's diet (flax seed or fish oil).
  2. Use a vet recommended flea preventive. If you have cats and dogs, be sure both animals using a flea preventative.
  3. Bath frequently with a gentle shampoo to remove bacteria and allergens. (See suggestions below).
  4. Allergy shots - testing and shots has been effective in almost 80% of the cases. These shots are easy to give yourself, once trained.
  5. Antihistamines may be helpful for severe times. They are usually combined with one or two other treatments. Consult your vet for a prescription and proper dosages.
  6. Communicate with your vet. There may be something more serious at the heart of the itching.
